Ever wonder how some photos make your nose look bigger or you look fat? Well it’s probably has something to do with the focal length of the lens on the camera.
The photo above and the gif below are from the blog of skilled Czech photographer Dan Vojtěch. It takes us from a very wide angle lens (20mm) which exaggerates perspective (and the nose), through a normal lens (50mm) which roughly equates to human vision, to a telephoto lens (200mm) which makes the face look flatter (and weightier).
While the differences between two images in the scale are very subtle, put together they show why focal length is so important, especially in portraits.
